Lesson: Habitats
Art Theory: Found Objects
Don't forget to label! As part of their science unit, these first grade kids were learning to label diagrams and drawings that were presented to them and that they created. Earlier the kids had invented a creature that was uniquely theirs. Today they were asked to create a scene for their animal and label all of the different parts. We started with a sketch.
After the sketch we went on a expedition to the fields and the students gathered up found objects and safely carried them in zip lock bags. I was shocked at the energy they had to run as quickly as they did all around that field! Students found flowers, grass, twigs, wrappers, and all sorts of "goodies." We returned back to the classroom and began glueing the objects to their paper to better create the perfect habitat. Then the students labeled every piece for their animal!
It was a fun lesson, and going outside made it even more fun. A change of scenery is always good. I found a pattern in their finished habitats. Besides the fact that each one was drastically different, the kids were attracted to bright vibrant colors. If they didn't find it in their objects they used bright colors to draw their pictures. It seemed the more color and the more texture the better the picture was, according to the children.
Here are some examples of the student's work. Some were more neat than others, but each was very unique:
