Evergreen Hands

Lesson: Christmas Tree

Art Theory: Tracing

Ms. Fenn and I planned this lesson together. Throughout the month of December the students would be learning holiday traditions from all around the world. As they learned a new tradition the students would get to create an ornament about that region of the world. But they would need something to hang those ornaments on. So we made a Christmas tree.

Each student got to pick what color of green they wanted, trace both of their hands, cut them out and glue them to a big paper to hang up the tree. Tracing both hands proved to be a challenge and the kids partnered up to help one another. Collaboration at its finest! The kids were excited and talking to each other about their holiday traditions and plans.

Throughout this semester I have learned the importance of integration. The kids learn better and remember more the things they learn when they are interwoven together. The holiday time is always surrounding them, so when you connect those memories to knowledge the kids remember them better. Art is the same way, it can be so fun to create something purely for creation, but it is also excited to create something that is related to what the students recognize or have learned in other subjects.
