Lesson: Human habitats
Art Theory: Crayon Resist
Every single week these kids blow me away! I plan to ask a myriad of questions to lead them to where we are going that week and usually they guess exactly what we are doing with the first question! This week they learned about habitats for animals and for people so we drew their habitats, but with a twist.
A crayon resist is simple, but there are a couple tricks. First, the students folded their papers in half and drew their habitats in a very dark colored crayon. We talked about how art is special when it is individual and that every habitat should look different. Their imaginations did not fail them. After they finished drawing we folded the paper in half and began to rub vigorously the crayon to the blank half of the paper. This was the challenge, the students were not strong enough to make the crayon transfer. However, if they used their pencils they were able to get a faint outline. The kids then drew the habitat and colored it in. Many of them exclaimed that they were magicians! And they certainly were.
This lesson seemed simple and I was worried that there would be lots of extra time at the end, however I learned it was not as simple as I thought. Throughout the processes the students were often confused and I found myself repeating the instructions for each student. This could have been avoided if I had done a better and more thorough demonstration of each step for them. Lesson learned!
Here are some examples of their work:
